The Bodleian has provided the following information about this question:
The Bodleian Libraries needs your views on an idea to allow books kept in the Collection Storage Facility in Swindon (shown on SOLO as ‘Bodleian Offsite Store’) to be borrowed by members of the University with borrowing rights.
The Bodleian Libraries has over 13 million books. Some of these are kept on the shelves in the libraries, but most of them are stored in the Collection Storage Facility. At the moment, most of the books stored in here cannot be borrowed and must be read in one of the Bodleian Libraries’ Reading Rooms.
We are investigating the possibility of allowing more of these books to be borrowed by University of Oxford students and staff. This would include books received on legal deposit as well as books we have bought.
This idea has pros and cons, and we need to know YOUR opinion to help make the decision. This is the case even if you don’t really mind or feel it doesn’t affect you. We need to know how academics and researchers in all subjects feel about this.
Please note:
- The idea does NOT include archives, manuscripts, rare books, maps or other materials that can only be consulted in the Weston Library.
- The idea does NOT include non-lending books on the open shelves and stacks of the libraries.
- The idea does NOT include books belonging to College or non-Bodleian departmental libraries.
