British Library and electronic Legal Deposit

As you know, the British Library continues to deal with the aftermath of a major cyber-attack. As a result, we do not have access to Electronic Legal Deposit content (eLD) which includes non-print legal deposit books, scores, journal articles and issues, and the UK Web Archive.

In order to help lessen the impact of this outage on our readers, if you need access to an electronic Legal Deposit item please contact your subject librarian. We are happy to purchase items where possible, and we may also be able to advise you on alternative sources and workarounds.

The History Faculty Library blog has a very useful post with tips: https://blogs.bodleian.ox.ac.uk/history/2023/11/21/british-library-cyber-attack-tips-for-workarounds/

The British Library has also just published a blog post about alternative access to web archives: https://blogs.bl.uk/webarchive/2024/01/exploring-alternative-access-making-the-most-of-web-archives-during-uk-web-archive-downtime.html

Readers can continue to request items using the Inter-library Requests service by clicking on the Need More? link in the top menu of SOLO, although print items from the British Library are not currently available.

We are in regular contact with the British Library and will continue to keep you informed with updates. We have created a dedicated page on the SOLO and electronic Legal Deposit LibGuides with information and resources: https://libguides.bodleian.ox.ac.uk/solo/eldnotavailable

We are considering a number of options to help provide a wider range of alternatives for items not currently available and will continue to update you. In the meantime, please do reach out to your subject librarians if you need to consult material which is affected by the outage.
