Cardiovascular Sciences

Oxford was the top-rated UK institution in cardiovascular science in the most recent research assessment exercise and is one of four British Heart Foundation (BHF) Centres of Research Excellence in the UK. Particularly notable is the integration of molecular science, physiology, and epidemiology, bringing together researchers with interests in the understanding of cardiac and vascular biology at both the molecular level, the level of the whole organism, and in populations.

Oxford has strong clinical and non-clinical training programmes, and internationally competitive research into nearly all aspects of cardiovascular science takes place in several university departments and institutes. These include the Radcliffe Department of Medicine (Cardiovascular Medicine Division), Nuffield Department of Clinical Medicine, Nuffield Department of Primary Care Health Sciences, Sir William Dunn School of Pathology, Department of Physiology, Anatomy and Genetics, Department of Pharmacology and the Department of Chemistry. The Weatherall Institute for Molecular Medicine and the Kennedy Institute (which moved to Oxford in 2011) also conduct research in cardiovascular sciences.

There are strong links between all groups working on cardiovascular science through regular internal meetings organized by the BHF Centre for Research Excellence and a strong external seminar programme. A unique feature of the Oxford cardiovascular community is the synergistic interaction of basic scientists with research active clinicians to deliver truly multi-disciplinary training.
