Associate Professor and Consultant in Respiratory Medicine
Following a degree in Physiological Sciences at University College, Oxford, I undertook a doctorate with Keith Dorrington and Peter Robbins in the Department of Physiology, Anatomy and Genetics (DPAG), focused on the pulmonary vascular response to hypoxia. I subsequently completed a medical degree, but continued research and teaching alongside my clinical training, initially as an NIHR Academic Clinical Fellow and later as an NIHR Academic Clinical Lecturer. I currently combine a post as a Consultant Respiratory Physician at Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust with a Departmental Lecturership in DPAG.
Research Interests
My research focuses on integrative cardiorespiratory physiology. I have an interest in the pulmonary vascular and respiratory responses to hypoxia, including the role of hypoxia inducible factor (HIF) pathways in regulating these responses, and the interaction of cellular iron and oxygen homeostasis in cardiorespiratory control. I am also leading and collaborating in research into the pathophysiology of COVID-19 pneumonia, and in the study of novel non-invasive methods of assessing lung function in respiratory disease. My particular interest is in translational physiology, and several current projects span from basic science to interventional clinical research studies.
Further information about current research is available on my group page.
Teaching Activity
At a departmental level, I teach respiratory and integrative physiology to undergraduates in Medicine and Biomedical Sciences through lectures, seminars and practical classes. I sit on the course committee for the Applied Physiology and Pharmacology course for preclinical medical students, lead the module in Respiratory Medicine for the Graduate Entry Medicine course, and coordinate the Human Applied Physiology option for the FHS Biomedical and Medical Sciences students. At a college level, I am a Research Fellow and College Lecturer in Biomedical Sciences at St Peter’s College, with responsibility for teaching systems physiology to preclinical students, and I am also a College Lecturer at University College. In 2019, I was awarded a Teaching Excellence Award by the Medical Sciences Division.
