Further Information & FAQs
What is happening?
Windows 10 will be retired and will no longer be supported by Microsoft. In accordance with University rules this means that PCs running Windows 10 will no longer be allowed on the MSD IT network. Microsoft has put strict requirements on the PC hardware that can be upgraded to Windows 11, meaning that many PCs will not be upgradable, and therefore effectively making them redundant. This applies to all PCs and laptops connecting to university networks and systems.
Medical Sciences need to ensure that all our PCs are running Windows 11 before this date. MSD IT Services and associate IT managers will work with you to identify PCs and ensure this migration to Windows 11 is completed within the deadline with minimal disruption.
Please act on this now, although September 2025 sounds a long way off MSD IT have over 7,000 devices on the network. We are keen to avoid bottlenecks, which are particularly likely over the summer as the deadline approaches.
What happens next?
Effectively there are three simple stages that you need to follow:
- Check the eligibility of your PC
- Register for an upgrade through the web form, or if your PC is not capable of an upgrade complete the 'end of life' form.
- Back up your hard drive prior to the agreed upgrade date.
Please look at the next steps page which will guide you fully through the process.
Who do I speak to?
There are clear instructions for what you need to do so you shouldn't need to speak to anyone, but if you do have questions that aren't answered here please “go to your local IT support team in the first instance, you can raise an enquiry with them online.
Operationally lots has already taken place, and this programme is being carefully managed to ensure we can move through in an effective fashion.
Are there any exceptions?
No. All laptops and desktop PCs will have to be running Windows 11 by October 2025 or they will not be allowed on the network. If your PC can't be upgraded then you will need to speak to your department about a replacement and fill in the end of life form.
What about research equipment?
Some expensive research equipment run older operating systems and will not support an upgrade to Windows 11. However mitigations are available to ensure this equipment can continue to be used without introducing security risks to MSD networks and systems. Contact your local IT support team to discuss the management of out-of-support research IT, you can raise an enquiry with them online.
