Clinical Medicine: Course Structure

Years 4-6 build on the foundation of knowledge and skills acquired during the pre-clinical years, to develop skills, knowledge and attitudes for effective clinical practice while maintaining a spirit of enquiry and critical thinking. The programme consists of a core curriculum taken by all students and student-selected components. The core curriculum aims to prepare students for Foundation Training following graduation. The student-selected components complement the core, allowing students to develop skills and knowledge in areas of particular interest, to explore career interests, and to build additional research, presentation and specialist clinical skills. The teaching and learning strategies of the course aim to support development of self-directed learning styles appropriate for work-based lifelong learning. Throughout the six years of the medical course, students take progressively greater responsibility for directing their own learning. Clinical attachments begin the transition to a sustainable method for learning in work-based settings. The timetables in Years 4-6 support this transition, by providing a mix of structured teaching sessions, supervised clinical experience and self-directed study.
