Yes, with reservations. Colleges will usually consider a request for a deferral by a year, if the request is made at the time of application (i.e., up to the time of interview): requests made after that time are usually viewed less sympathetically, because it is then more difficult for us to re-fill the empty place for the current year. However, remember that in asking for a deferral you are asking your college to mortgage one of next year’s places: so the college must be reasonably sure that you are at least as good as the best two or three candidates it will see next year. In practice, we do usually allow one or two deferrals each year; but don’t be surprised if your college simply advises you to re-apply next year.
