Students who have been accepted on the Elective Programme and do not have an EU or UK passport will need to apply for a Tier 4 (General) student visa.   Four months before the commencement of your placement the Elective Co-ordinator will email you a CAS (Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies) application form for completion.   A CAS number will be provided by the University and emailed to you by the Elective Co-ordinator together with details about how to apply for your Tier 4 visa. Three months before your placement you can apply for a Tier 4 Visa on line.  In addition it will be necessary to visit a local visa application centre in your country.

You will need to pay a visa application fee (£328) and must show that you have sufficient funds in your bank account to cover the cost of your accommodation and living expenses whilst in Oxford.   Your bank statements must show that you have held the following amount for 28 consecutive days before applying for your visa:

4 week Elective placement: £1,015.         6 week Elective placement: £2,030.

8 week Elective placement: £2,030.         10 week Elective placement: £3,045.

If you arrive in Oxford without the appropriate visa you will not be able to take part in the Medical School Elective Programme.   In particular, you cannot come to the UK as a Standard Visitor (tourist).

If you are taking part in an Elective in another UK University which requires a Tier 4 Visa you will need a second Tier 4 Visa to take part in an Elective at Oxford.   One Tier 4 Visa will not cover two Elective placements in the UK.
