Macromolecular crystallography has become the pivotal tool in establishing the mechanisms that underlie biological phenomena. It has further established itself at the heart of the modern drug discovery process. This course aims to introduce students to the theory underlying crystallographic methods and to provide students with the capability to apply these methods to their own research.


The course is split between taught seminars and practical classes in the computer lab. There will also be a practical session in the crystallisation lab.


This course provides a theoretical and practical introduction to the process by which crystallographic structures are determined. Students will be presented with both the fundamental physical principles that underlie crystallographic practise, and will gain hands-on experience of experimental and computational aspects of structure determination.  At the end of the course, students will have used experimental data to solve structures by both molecular replacement and by experimental phasing.
