X-Ray Crystallography ONLINE
Monday, 09 November 2020 to Friday, 13 November 2020, 10am - 4.30pm
Apply for this courseThis online course provides MSD DPhil and early career researchers with an introduction to the process by which crystallographic structures are determined.
You are expected to attend five sessions:
9 November @ 10:00 - 16:30
10 November @ 10:00 - 16:30
11 November @ 10:00 - 16:30
12 November @ 10:00 - 16:30
13 November @ 10:00 - 16:30
COURSE CONTENT
Students are presented with both the fundamental physical principles that underlie crystallographic practise, and will gain understanding of experimental and computational aspects of structure determination. At the end of the course, students will have used experimental data to solve structures by both molecular replacement and by experimental phasing, and will be ready to begin to tackle crystallographic problems drawn from their own area of research. Teaching will be conducted through live interactive online sessions run each morning and afternoon of the course duration. Downloadable slides and example data will be available via Teams.
COURSE OBJECTIVES
By the end of this course, you will be able to:
- Understand the fundamental physical principles that underlie crystallographic practise
- Benefit from experience of experimental and computational aspects of structure determination
- Be ready to tackle crystallographic problems drawn from your own area of research
FORMAT
The course is split between taught seminars and practical computing classes. Both of these will be taught online through Microsoft Teams to allow interaction between students and tutors. Sessions will run each morning and afternoon for the duration of the course. Once booked on the course, you will need to download the slides and example data from the 'My Resources' section of the booking system.
WHAT YOU WILL NEED
A good internet connection, uninterrupted time, and your camera and microphone enabled on your PC.
SOFTWARE REQUIRED
You will need to install the CCP4 suite on your own computer for the data processing tutorials. This is available for Windows, Mac and Linux from here:http://www.ccp4.ac.uk/download/index.php
HOW IT WILL WORK
This course has pre-course materials needed for reference in the session. These can be accessed in My Resources. For the interactive session, you will be sent the link in the automated communication along with joining instructions. To join the session, you can click on the link 15 minutes before the session. Once the tutor has started the session they will tell you what to do.
ATTENDANCE CERTIFICATE ON SURVEY COMPLETION
It is now a requirement that you complete the three short questions in the survey you receive after attending the course. Once you have submitted the survey, you will be sent an email with a link to your attendance certificate. This is to ensure we receive the feedback we need to evaluate and improve our courses. Survey results are downloaded and stored anonymously.
PLEASE NOTE
Where no cost is given in the shopping trolley, no deposit is required. However, more than two consecutive non-attendances or late cancellations without good reason will be logged and may mean you cannot attend any further MSD training that term. Please refer to our Terms and Conditions for further information.
