Monday, 31 October 2022 to Friday, 04 November 2022, 10am - 4.30am
Apply for this courseYou are expected to attend five sessions:
31 October @ 10:00 - 16:30

3 November @ 10:00 - 16:30
4 November @ 10:00 - 16:30
COURSE CONTENT
Students are presented with both the fundamental physical principles that underlie crystallographic practise, and will gain understanding of experimental and computational aspects of structure determination. At the end of the course, students will have used experimental data to solve structures by both molecular replacement and by experimental phasing, and will be ready to begin to tackle crystallographic problems drawn from their own area of research. Teaching will be conducted in person in the Biochemistry Department. Downloadable slides and example data will be available.
COURSE OBJECTIVES
By the end of this course, you will be able to:
Understand the fundamental physical principles that underlie crystallographic practise Benefit from experience of experimental and computational aspects of structure determination Be ready to tackle crystallographic problems drawn from your own area of research
FORMAT
The course is split between taught seminars and practical computing classes. Sessions will run each morning and afternoon for the duration of the course.
WHAT YOU WILL NEED
Practical classes will be taught using the students' own laptops. Please bring a laptop with you to the course.
SOFTWARE REQUIRED
You will need to install the CCP4 suite on your own computer for the
data processing tutorials. This is available for Windows, Mac and Linux
from here:http://www.ccp4.ac.uk/download/index.php.
It is also advisable to download and install the Phenix suite from
https://phenix-online.org/download
We will organise a session early in the course to test that students
have working software installations.
ATTENDANCE CERTIFICATE ON SURVEY COMPLETION
It is now a requirement that you complete the three short questions in the survey you receive after attending the course. Once you have submitted the survey, you will be sent an email with a link to your attendance certificate. This is to ensure we receive the feedback we need to evaluate and improve our courses. Survey results are downloaded and stored anonymously.
PLEASE NOTE
Where no cost is given in the shopping trolley, no deposit is required. However, more than two consecutive non-attendances or late cancellations without good reason will be logged and may mean you cannot attend any further MSD training that term. Please refer to our Terms and Conditions for further information.
