This five day interactive online training course is suitable for all MSD postgraduate research students and postdoctoral early career researchers involved with bright field and fluorescence microscopy.

You are expected to attend five sessions:

16 November @ 9am-5pm

17 November @ 9am-5pm

18 November @ 9am-5pm

19 November @ 9am-5pm

20 November @ 9am-5pm

This online interactive programme is adapted from the classroom-based version. It will cover the fundamental basis of all major aspects of optical microscopy, ranging from specimen preparation, molecular markers, instrumentation, image analysis and quantification, right up to the most recent and revolutionary developments.

Please make sure you read all of the sections below relating to how the course will work, and the survey and attendance certificate policy.

A detailed course schedule can be downloaded here.

Day 1: Principles of light microscopy

Day 2: Fluorescence Microscopy

Day 3: Quantitative imaging

Day 4: Super-resolution microscopy

Day 5: Demos and practicals

At the end of the course, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the theoretical and practical aspects of optical microscopy
  • Understand the different imaging modalities and its applications in biomedical research
  • Learn about image data handling and image analysis and appreciate the significance of AI
  • Understand the design and built considerations of bespoke microscopes

Booking confirmation and reminder emails will send you the link for the live interactive sessions (held in Teams) and joining instructions. To join the session, you can click on the link 15 minutes before the session. Once the tutor has started the first session, they will tell you what to do. All sessions will use the same joining link.

A good internet connection, uninterrupted time, camera and microphone enabled on PC.

It is now a requirement that you complete the three short questions in the survey you receive after attending the course. Once you have submitted the survey, you will be sent an email with a link to your attendance certificate. This is to ensure we receive the feedback we need to evaluate and improve our courses. Survey results are downloaded and stored anonymously.

Where there is no cost in the shopping trolley, no deposit is required. However, more than two consecutive non-attendances or late cancellations without good reason will be logged and may mean you cannot attend any further MSD training that term. Please refer to our Terms and Conditions for further information.
