This ITLC-run course instance for MSD postgraduate researchers will cover ideas and techniques for designing and improving research posters.


This two hour session will look at real research posters to see what we can learn from them. We will discuss, in a constructive way, 'the good, the bad and the ugly', and come away with some ideas and techniques that can be easily applied. We will look at the elements of a poster and the most efficient design process to build those elements into a poster that is effective and aesthetically pleasing. Although the session is delivered with PowerPoint in mind, all of the ideas are equally applicable for other poster design tools such as InDesign and Scribus. This session has limited opportunity for hands-on practice in poster design, but you will have access to the course tutor after the session should you wish to discuss your own poster.

You will need to provide your own computer with a browser and the Teams desktop app installed. You will need a webcam and microphone with speakers or headset. You need to be online with a reliable internet connection, however, no specific software is required to participate. If, after the course, you want to explore the ideas discussed, you will need to install your own poster design tool.


This teacher-led session is 2 hours long including breaks and has up to 8 participants per session. This ensures that your teachers can give participants one-to-one support - just as we would in the classroom. Participants use their own computer and can take part in the course anywhere. The teacher guides the participant through the material, encouraging participation and interaction and it will involve discussion about the elements and design process of academic posters. The course will start promptly at the time advertised.
