How to be a milestone assessor and an internal examiner at Oxford, online
Friday, 11 April 2025, 10am to 12.30pm
Apply for this courseThis is a 2.5 hour course for those in academic posts at the University of Oxford who are likely to be called to act as a milestone assessor (transfer and confirmation of status assessments), an internal DPhil/MSc by research examiner, or as an external examiner. This Workshop is UNSUITABLE for students.
COURSE DESCRIPTION
Please note: you need to complete the online ‘DPhil Supervision at Oxford (Sciences)’ training course before attending this workshop. You can access the course here (SSO required to enrol via Canvas).
This live 2.5-hour workshop is tailored to the needs of those in academic posts at the University of Oxford, including new principal investigators (PIs) who supervise postgraduate research students and are likely to act as a milestone assessor (transfer and confirmation of status assessments), an internal DPhil/MSc by research examiner, or as an external examiner. In particular, the course aims to bridge a notable shortfall in training provision for academic staff with regards to acting as an examiner at institutions other than Oxford. This is particularly important given the significant variation in PhD viva protocols around the UK and overseas, and the need to perform such duties robustly and accurately while acting as a representative of the University of Oxford
COURSE OBJECTIVES
By the end of this course, you will:
- Understand the mechanisms by which graduate research students (DPhil and MSc by Research) are assessed and examined within the MSD in Oxford, including documentation and reporting
- Understand how to act as a ‘Transfer of Status’ Assessor
- Understand how to act as a ‘Confirmation of Status’ Assessor
- Understand how to act as an ‘Internal Examiner’ at Oxford and be considerate of the requirements that accompany appointment as an ‘External Examiner’ at an institution over than Oxford, nationally or internationally

feedback from previous session
It was a very helpful walk through. I found the questions about what to ask, and personal experiences very helpful
Presenters were very welcoming and friendly but also experienced and knowledgeable - appreciated that they had so many examples to draw from.
It was a good pace despite having a lot of information. I feel more confident to become a assessor/examiner in the future - thank you!
