An introduction to fluorescence microscopy
Tuesday, 24 May 2022, 2pm to 5.30pm
***This course is fully booked*** This half-day training course is delivered by Nikon Healthcare UK on behalf of MSD Skills training introduces MSD postgraduate researchers to the principles of fluorescence microscopy.
Please allow time to get to the teaching venue, the Institute of Reproductive Sciences, at the Oxford Business Park in Cowley.
During this half-day course, you will receive microscopy laboratory induction and health and safety training followed by an introduction to fluorescence microscopy.
If you are new to microscopy, we advise you also attend the Introduction to microscopy that runs in the morning on the same day.
On this course you will:
- Learn about resolution and magnification
- Discover fluorescence – the fundamentals of excitation and emission
- Be introduced to the fluorescence microscope, including filters, light source, camera.
- Learn about fluorescent proteins, probes and matching them with appropriate filters
- Identify challenges of using fluorescence microscopy – photo bleaching and toxicity
- Learn about NIS elements software - image capture, visualization, and processing
- Learn about confocal microscopy and the effect of pinhole (in brief)
HOW IT WILL WORK
The course will be delivered at specialist laboratory facilities at the Institute of Reproductive Sciences (Nuffield Department of Women’s & Reproductive Health, University of Oxford). The Institute is based at the Oxford Business Park in Cowley. Laboratory consumables (including gloves, slides and lab coats) will be provided.
WHAT YOU WILL NEED
You will need to guarantee you are able to attend promptly as the lab space health and safety induction at the start is compulsory for participation in the course. If you are new to microscopy, we advise you first attend the ‘Introduction to microscopy’ half-day training course.
ATTENDANCE SURVEY ON COMPLETION
It is now a requirement that you complete the three short questions in the survey you receive after attending the course. Once you have submitted the survey, you will be sent an email with a link to your attendance certificate. This is to ensure we receive the feedback we need to evaluate and improve our courses.
