MSD postgraduate research students and early-career researchers join UK EQUATOR Centre writing experts to learn a smooth, effective process for writing and publishing a journal article. The course uses a flipped-classroom approach with self-directed online work before a live session.
COURSE DESCRIPTION
Are you a postgraduate student or early-career researcher preparing to write or co-write a journal article? This course aims to give you a smooth, effective process for planning, writing, and publishing a clear, complete journal article, embedding reproducibility practices.
We will use a flipped-classroom approach. When you sign up for the course, you will gain access to a Canvas space with prerecorded lectures and exercises to complete before the live session date. This online self-directed learning will take you approximately 6 hours to complete.
In the live session, we will consolidate your learning, answer questions, and put your learning into practice by revising text in small groups.
The course covers topics such as:
- Planning the message for an article
- Authorship and acknowledgement
- Choosing a target journal
- Tips for writing each section of the article
- Scientific language and style
- Dealing with peer review
- Managing writing as a team
This course is suitable for postgraduate research students and early-career researchers with limited experience of academic writing who are preparing to write or co-write a manuscript. The course is not suitable for those who are early in their research planning or conduct and not yet ready to write. It is also not suitable for those looking for help in writing their thesis or transfer report – we have separate courses focusing on these documents.
This course is provided by writing experts from the UK EQUATOR Centre.
COURSE OBJECTIVES
