Modular innovation strategy programme for MSD DPhil students with active research involvement and a keen interest in innovation strategy

COURSE AIM

  • To broaden the DPhil student’s horizon by putting research skills acquired during the DPhil into a broader perspective of the innovation landscape.
  • To demonstrate how the ‘innovation game’ works and who the key stakeholders are.
  • To convey the basic principles of innovation to DPhil students so they will know how to navigate successfully through the innovation landscape.

COURSE FORMAT

ALL MODULES ARE COMPULSORY. If you do not attend one module in the programme, you will not be allowed on others or receive a completion certificate.

The Medical Science Division, MRC DTP and Oxford Academic Health Science Centre have partnered together to deliver a tailored course in Innovation Strategy for Life Sciences and Healthcare. This course will equip you with core business and leadership skills, help you develop entrepreneurial mind-set, and deliver knowledge on UK Innovation policy and routes to impact. This 50-hour course will be delivered in three modules around several innovation centres in Oxford. The course will finish with an opportunity to take part in one of several hackathons regularly organised in Oxford, where you will address real-world problems together with fellow DPhil students later in the year.

 

Module 1: Leadership and interpersonal skills (Stansfeld Park, Oxford OX3 8SB)

This interpersonal skills course will aim to give you an understanding of yourself and others, develop your influencing skills and the way you work in teams and introduce the idea of leadership to be effective in an organisation.

Module 2: Innovation policy (Oxford Sciences Innovation, 46 Woodstock Road, Oxford, OX2 6HT)

The Innovation policy course will explore what vehicles and approaches are used by central government and large funders to fund and manage research and innovation in the UK.

Module 3: Entrepreneurship – building a business (Bio-escalator, Oxford, OX3 7FZ)

This three day programme on building a business will take you through the key elements of creating, testing, developing and communicating an idea for a business or social enterprise.
