Alexandra Preston was awarded the Graduate Student 2022 Outstanding Abstract Achievement Award by the American Society of Hematology (ASH), presenting her research at the 64th ASH Annual Meeting and Exposition.
The award recognises the abstract titled ‘An Ancient Transcriptional Hub Couples Developmentally Regulated Gene Expression with Metabolism during Erythropoiesis’. The work, based at the Drakesmith Group in the MRC Human Immunology Unit, discovered a new control mechanism involved in blood cell production. The research demonstrates a role of the gene Nprl3, modulating red cell production to changing nutrient availabilities. They demonstrate enhancer sharing between Nprl3 and ɑ-globin, enabling alignment of metabolism in erythropoiesis to haemoglobin production.
