Pleural disease
The Oxford Centre for Respiratory Medicine has been foremost in the UK in advancing the understanding of pleural disease such as empyema, malignant pleural effusions and pneumothorax. The thrust of its research has been mainly clinical and designed to answer important clinical questions. Recent advances in this area include the use of fibrinolytics in the management of empyema and malignant effusions, safety and efficacy of pleurodesis agents, and identification of organisms responsible for empyema. The unit runs ultrasound and thoracoscopy courses.
