Investigating the feasibility of an obstetric surveillance and research system in Assam, India
Dr Manisha Nair and Prof. Marian Knight (Nuffield Department of Population Health) received a grant from the John Fell Fund to support their work in establishing an obstetric research system, based upon a UK model, in Assam, India. Hear Dr. Nair speak about the research, and how the John Fell Fund supported it.
Project overview
India is reported to have the highest number of maternal deaths in absolute numbers worldwide, and within India, the state of Assam has the highest maternal mortality rate. This project investigated the feasibility of establishing a surveillance and research system to gather evidence about the risk factors for maternal mortality in Assam. The system was based on a UK model, which since this project has been modified into a larger UK-India collaborative platform for maternal and perinatal health research within India.

FUNDING
This project received £7k from the John Fell Fund (Small Award) between June 2014 and August 2015. This supported Dr Nair to travel to India to conduct the feasibility study, which the panel felt would put her in a good position to apply for external funding to support the work further.
