Val, who sadly passed away in July 2024, was an Emeritus Associate Professor in the Nuffield Department of Surgical Sciences, University of Oxford. Previously, she was a Group Leader at the MRC Weatherall Institute of Molecular Medicine for over 15 years, focusing on IGF biology.
The Valentine Macaulay Bursary Fund will provide financial assistance for early career researchers to attend the IGF and Insulin System in Physiology and Disease Conference, at the Ventura Beach Marriott in California, United States, from 16 to 21 March 2025.
Val had a deep commitment to mentoring the next generation of researchers, and it was her particular goal to ensure that underprivileged scientists would have the opportunity to attend this conference, which she was due to Co-Chair, regardless of financial constraints.
There is an initial target of $11,000 (roughly £8,600), which will fully fund five bursary places (or partially fund 10, depending on application numbers) to attend the conference.
The bursaries will be administered by the Organising Committee for the IGF and Insulin System in Physiology and Disease Conference, within Gordon Research Conferences (GRC). Any additional monies raised will be used to support students working on IGF signalling and administered by the IGF Society.
