Tell us a bit about your role
Dr. Guanlin Wang is a Postdoctoral Researcher in computational biology in Prof. Adam Mead group at MRC Weatherall Institute of Molecular Medicine (MRC WIMM). She obtained her PhD from Chinese Academy of Sciences and University of Aberdeen, where she was trained as a computational biologist and part-time physiologist.
After her PhD, she was keen on adapting her bioinformatics skills to help develop cancer therapies using state-of-the-art single cell -omics techniques and then joined Oxford in 2019 working on myeloid blood malignancies especially myelofibrosis.
She is developing a computational pipeline to analyse cell-cell interactions using single cell transcriptomics data, which can be applied to different disease models to find potential treatment targets. Using single cell technologies, we can get a better resolution of cellular heterogeneity, which will facilitate drug development for cancer patients.
What is the most meaningful aspect of your work?
As a female computational biologist, the most exciting thing for me is to encourage more young female students to get involved in computational biology and coding. During my PhD, two female undergraduate students worked with is now perusing their career in computational science and computational biology.
Can you tell us about something you've done, contributed to that you're most proud of?
More rare diseases/cancers can be cured or at least properly treated with the development of medical sciences;
What changes would you most like to see in the Medical Sciences in the next 100 years?
More female scientist leaders in this field.
