Research

After reading Physiological Sciences at Keble College, I took a DPhil  studying the control of gut endocrine cell function and proliferation under Professor John Morris in the Department of Anatomy. I trained in Medicine at Kings School of Medicine and Dentistry. I have twice won the Royal College of General Practitioners research paper of the year (as lead and senior author). I worked as a general practitioner in Hackney, east London for 20 years, before moving to Arbury Medical Practice in Cambridge.

My research focuses on respiratory health, in particular, the health effects of air pollution. I lead the CHILL (Children's Health in London and Luton) Cohort, evaluating the impacts of London's Ultra Low Emission Zone on children's health. I am Director of the MRC-funded NEXUS global partnership, evaluating health impacts of non-exhaust pollution. With Professor Sir Aziz Sheikh, I was co-Director of the Asthma UK Centre for Applied Research (AUKCAR), and now co-Direct with him, the Centre for Applied Respiratory Research, Innovation and Impact.

Supervision

I have supervised 18 doctoral students to successful completion.
