The Trinity Term 2020 round of the Wellcome Institutional Strategic Support Fund (ISSF – deadline 29 April 2020) has been cancelled.

The ISSF Chair and fund Coordinators in MSD have taken the difficult decision to cancel this funding round due to the ongoing COVID-19 crisis. The ISSF Committee apologise sincerely to researchers who were intending to apply to this round and we understand the difficulties facing researchers and their teams at the current time. Many researchers across the University are currently unable to conduct their research with all non-essential access to Departments and laboratories being restricted, with additional impact on clinical research and field work. The Committee are hopeful that the next round of the Wellcome ISSF scheme will run in Michaelmas Term with a deadline in mid-October 2020, and further information will follow as soon as possible. When the current restrictions are lifted the ISSF Committee look forward to continuing to support the excellent researchers and projects across the University.

The ISSF is a block grant provided to the University from Wellcome. The ISSF Committee receives applications for funding from any department in the University. Research projects must fall within the Wellcome remit, as well as the strategic remit of biomedical research at Oxford. The ISSF Committee especially welcomes cross-divisional bids. The University of Oxford and Wellcome are committed to equality and diversity and the ISSF Committee encourages applications so that the ISSF supports the full range of the diversity of our research staff.

The Oxford-Wellcome Institutional Strategic Support Fund (ISSF) will support strategically important activity across the University of Oxford in biomedical and clinical sciences, public health, social sciences and the medical humanities. The ISSF is open to all researchers across the University of Oxford working in these areas.

£1 million per year has been awarded to the University of Oxford by Wellcome for a five-year period (2016-2021). The funding for the Wellcome ISSF block grant will end on 30 September 2022; all projects must end and be fully spent by this date. No extensions beyond 30 Sep 2022 will be permitted.
