Developing a novel dengue vaccine
Professor Arturo Reyes-Sandoval (Nuffield Department of Clinical Medicine) was awarded Medical Research Council Confidence in Concept funding for his project to develop a new vaccine against dengue fever. Listen to him speak about his research and experience of funding.
Dengue virus infects 400 million people a year, and is a leading cause of illness and death in the tropics and subtropics. Professor Reyes-Sandoval and his team had already developed vaccine candidates for this virus, and this project focused on testing their efficacy through collaborations with a team in Brazil.

The MRC Confidence in Concept Fund awarded £50k to this translational project to develop a dengue virus vaccine between October 2015 and August 2016. The panel felt the team was strong, and collaboration with Brazilian researchers was key as Brazil is a major dengue market. There was good potential that outcomes would lead to Developmental Pathway Funding Scheme application to the MRC and/or pilot data to support clinical studies.
