Application process
There is a two stage application process for the Nuffield Medical Fellowships, with shortlisting at each stage followed by in-person interviews.
-
The Stage 1 application portal opens in July 2026 and closes on Monday 19th October 2026 at 12noon BST.
-
After the Stage 1 application deadline, all applications will undergo initial eligibility checks by the Fellowship scheme managers.
-
All eligible applications will then go through to an internal review panel comprising a subgroup of the Nuffield Medical Trustees and senior academics from the Medical Sciences Division. The panel will shortlist applications against the assessment criteria
-
When a shortlist has been agreed by the panel, applicants will be matched with a host department by the panel and scheme managers in negotiation with the departments. The shortlisted applications will be shared with the relevant Heads of Department or their delegates for review, and departments will approve in principle their support for hosting the Fellow.
-
Invitations will be sent to shortlisted candidates to submit a stage 2 application. The Stage 2 application portal is expected to open in January 2027 and close in April 2027. Applicants who have not been shortlisted will be notified in January 2027.
-
Stage 2 applicants will be formally connected with their prospective host departments while they prepare their stage 2 application. The applicant and host department will have initial discussions about their Fellowship programme, and colleagues in the department will work with the Fellow to create their research costing.
-
All Stage 2 applications will be reviewed by the internal review panel and representatives of the host departments, and other specialist reviewers as appropriate. The reviewers will assess Stage 2 applications against the assessment criteria
-
The panel will shortlist the applicants, and shortlisted candidates will be invited to an in-person interview in Oxford. Applicants who have not been shortlisted will be notified.
-
Interviews will be held in Oxford, expected to be held in July 2027. Interviewees must book their own travel and accommodation for the interviews; reasonable costs of attending the interview will be reimbursed.
-
The top candidates will receive a verbal offer of a Fellowship after the last interview. The University will contact their named referees for references at this point.
-
A full job description and contract of employment will be prepared for the candidate. Once the job description is finalised, the host department will work with the University's Staff Immigration team to initiate the visa application process (if required).
