The Nuffield Medical Fellowships were established in 2026 to support exceptional early-career researchers who are either transitioning to or have recently achieved full research independence. Applicants must demonstrate outstanding potential and submit a compelling research proposal that fits strategically with any department in the University of Oxford's Medical Sciences Division, and aims to advance any area of medical research. Crucially, the proposed research programme must involve a collaborative link with a research institution based in a Commonwealth country outside the UK.

The Trustees of the Nuffield Medical Trust, as funder of the Fellowships, are committed to supporting a robust and well-funded programme. Funding is available to support two Fellowships in the first cohort, with the inaugural fellows expected to take up their posts in early 2028. Each Fellowship will provide full salary for the Fellow in line with the appropriate University of Oxford staff grade, along with generous funding for their research programme. Going forwards the Trustees expect to appoint one to two Fellows per year through an annual recruitment round.

Fellows must undertake research in a biomedical field (may be clinical or pre-clinical) and Fellowships may be hosted within any department of the Medical Sciences Division. Applicants must present a proposal that aims to progress medical knowledge through outcomes that are expected to benefit human physical or mental health.
