Business Development

The Medical Sciences Division operates an in-house Business Development team and works closely with other specialist teams across the University to facilitate the activities listed above.

The divisional Business Development team actively seeks to promote and facilitate collaborative research with a range of industrial partners. Its focussed remit allows the division to provide the necessary resources to develop, deliver and support long-term partnerships. This team has been instrumental in setting up a number of strategic partnerships with big pharma and in building relationships with SME’s. It has also led the divisional input into the recently-funded BioEscalator initiative which will provide a unique environment to bring together academics and medical research companies to progress new technologies and therapeutics.

Oxford University Innovation Ltd

Oxford University Innovation Ltd manages the University of Oxford’s intellectual property portfolio, working with university researchers to identify, protect and market technologies through licensing, spin-out company formation, consulting and material sales. Oxford University Innovation is also a strategic commercialisation partner for the Oxford University Hospitals NHS Trust, facilitating the integrated application of clinical and non-clinical resources to support the translation of healthcare research into new products and services.

Research Services

Research Services supports researchers and administrators in the grant application process, industry and academic collaborations, and negotiation of research related contracts. Research Services submitted 1237 grant applications and completed 2294 research contracts during FY 12/13 for the University’s Medical Sciences Division alone.

Collectively these related functions have a wealth of experience supporting the creation of commercial partnerships. The Medical Sciences Research Services and Business Development teams are co-located in the Joint Research Office on the Churchill Hospital site adjacent to the Old Road Campus, alongside the research support teams for the OUH NHS Trust promoting closer collaboration between the two institutions. Furthermore, Oxford University Innovation has a “spoke" office within the adjacent Kennedy Institute, and operates number of other "spoke" offices in our departments. Co-location provides researchers with easy access to all aspects of support required for commercialisation support.
