Jonathan Barker

Divisional Safety Officer (Pre-Clinical Depts)

I am one of four Divisional Safety Officers in the Medical Sciences Division and I support the pre-clinical Medical Sciences departments based in the Science Area. My office is in the Department of Pharmacology on Mansfield Road.

My role is to help Heads of Department fulfil their health and safety responsibilities and ensure compliance with University Safety Policies. I work closely with the Departmental Safety Officers, Biological Safety Officers and Laboratory Managers to help achieve this through safety inspections and tours, reviewing risk assessments and providing local training. I am a member of each department’s Departmental Safety Advisory Committee (DSAC) and Genetic Modification Safety Committee (GMSC). I have close links with my colleagues in both the University Safety Office and the Occupational Health Service as well as working closely with my Divisional Safety colleagues supporting the John Radcliffe Hospital and Old Road Campus sites.

I gained my BSc. (Hons) in Chemistry at the University of Warwick and I hold a NEBOSH Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety. I am also commissioned into the Volunteer Reserve (Training) branch of the Royal Air Force as member of the Air Training Corps and am currently the Officer Commanding of 2507 (Bicester) Squadron, ATC.
