The divisional Information Governance Office (IGO) has been re-established and commenced in a reconfigured form on 1 August 2017. We’re here to support the Division with information governance (IG) matters, and complement existing actives and good practice. You can send any IG queries to email@example.com.

What is the IGO?
The IGO will be staffed by the University’s Information Security Team and overseen by the Divisional Secretary, Dr David Bryan and the Medical Sciences Board’s Information Governance and Security Committee. Our goal is to take away some of the burden of IG requirements so that you can concentrate on the world-leading research for which the Division is renowned. The main aims of the service are to:
- Develop and implement a comprehensive divisional information governance framework to ensure compliance with internal and external requirements, and to support the Division’s strategic objectives.
- Develop and maintain relationships with departments and units to ensure that appropriate information governance arrangements are in place across the Division, and beyond where appropriate.
- Provide support and guidance to departments, units and researchers in the satisfying of external compliance requirements needed for the continuation of their research, such as the NHS IGT, and maintain visibility and coordination of these activities.
- Liaise with external agencies to understand, shape and comply with their information governance requirements. This includes, but is not limited to: HSCIC, NRA, NIHR, NHS, OUH NHS FT, OH NHS FT, MRC and MHRA.
What have we done so far?
Over the last month, we have engaged with several departments in order to understand key concerns around information governance and begin to build a network of contacts. We’re working with MSD IT Services to ensure a coordinated approach to IT and information governance, and we have had a very productive meeting with NHS Digital to discuss our plans for increasing our visibility and simplifying the process for accessing data.
In addition, we started fielding queries via firstname.lastname@example.org, helping with grant applications, provided guidance on IG and security related topics such as secure file sharing.
What will we be doing next?
We aim to have visited every department by the end of the October, and at the same time to begin to help you unlock the red tape around accessing research data, especially using the NHS IG Toolkit. We will also carry on working with NHS Digital and other external stakeholders. Specifically, over the coming months we will be:
- Contributing to sector workshops on upcoming changes to the NHS IG Toolkit;
- Acting as an early-adopter to a simplified process for DARS and user account management; and
- Consolidating the IGT requirements and aligning them to our internal baseline requirements, so that tracking compliance is easier.
