This online course provides MSD DPhil and early career researchers with an introduction to the process by which crystallographic structures are determined.

COURSE AIM

This online course provides MSD DPhil and early career researchers with an introduction to the process by which crystallographic structures are determined. Students are presented with both the fundamental physical principles that underlie crystallographic practise, and will gain understanding of experimental and computational aspects of structure determination. At the end of the course, students will have used experimental data to solve structures by both molecular replacement and by experimental phasing, and will be ready to begin to tackle crystallographic problems drawn from their own area of research. Teaching will be conducted through live interactive online sessions run each morning and afternoon of the course duration. Downloadable slides and example data will be available via Teams.

COURSE CONTENT

  • Learn about the fundamental physical principles that underlie crystallographic practise
  • Gain experience of experimental and computational aspects of structure determination
  • Become ready to tackle crystallographic problems drawn from your own area of research

COURSE FORMAT

The course is split between taught seminars and practical computing classes. Both of these will be taught online through Microsoft Teams to allow interaction between students and tutors. Sessions will run each morning and afternoon for the duration of the course. Once booked on the course, you will need to download the slides and example data from the 'My Resources' section of the booking system. More information available here.

Prerequisites

You will need a good internet connection for the live interaction sessions via Teams

You will need to install the CCP4 suite on your own computer for the data processing tutorials. This is available for Windows, Mac and Linux from here:
