Online interactive two day course suitable for Medical Sciences Division researchers who want to learn more about qualitative research with a view to conducting a qualitative research study. This course contains pre-work you will need to complete before each live session.

COURSE AIM

Are you planning a qualitative research study as part of your research/clinical practice? This course is accessible and relevant to qualitative and quantitative Medical Sciences Division researchers who want to learn more about qualitative research with a view to conducting a qualitative research study. This online course for Medical Sciences Division researchers will teach you how to plan and undertake a qualitative research study.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

  • Understand different approaches to qualitative research and decide which to use
  • Learn what makes a good quality study
  • Be aware of current reporting guidelines for qualitative research
  • Learn how to code and analyse qualitative data
  • Explore the issue of qualitative sample size
  • Understand the concept of saturation.

COURSE FORMAT

It will consist of pre-recorded material and tasks on Canvas that you will need to work through before two-hour long interactive sessions, held on two separate days. Please refer to 'This course has pre-work' below for further detail.

You will need to complete short tasks before each interactive session. All of the necessary documents will be made available once you book onto the course. Instructions for each task will also be available. 

Pre-course work (split between the two sessions):

  • A series of short (6–13-minute) videos covering some of the essentials of qualitative research (total approximately 66 minutes)
  • 3 short tasks on (a) appraisal (b) coding data (c) analysing data (do not spend more than 30 minutes on each of these).

HOW IT WILL WORK

For the interactive session, you will be sent the link in the automated communication along with joining instructions. To join the session, you can click on the link 15 minutes before the session. Once the tutor has started the session they will tell you what to do. 

THIS COURSE HAS PRE-WORK

Once you have booked on the course, you will receive the enrolment invitation link from Canvas. Accepting this link gives you access to the pre-work (pre-recorded lectures, exercises and other materials) you will need to work through to participate in the live sessions.

WHAT YOU WILL NEED

A good internet connection, uninterrupted time, camera and microphone enabled on PC.

ATTENDANCE CERTIFICATE ON SURVEY COMPLETION

It is now a requirement that you complete the three short questions in the survey you receive after attending the course. Once you have submitted the survey, you will be sent an email with a link to your attendance certificate. This is to ensure we receive the feedback we need to evaluate and improve our courses. Survey results are downloaded and stored anonymously.
