We study the normal regulation of plasma glucose and how it becomes disrupted in diabetes. Our work focuses on the cells that secrete the plasma glucose-regulating hormones glucagon (that increases plasma glucose) and insulin (that lowers plasma glucose). In diabetes, insulin secretion is reduced and glucagon secretion increased. The aim of our work is to establish why these disturbances develop and if they can be corrected pharmacologically.
