Immune regulation and innate immune responses in Dengue and other viral infections

Dengue Virus (DENV) infection is with 100 million annual cases a major public health problem in the tropics. Disease severities range from mild Dengue Fever (DF) to potentially fatal Dengue Haemorrhagic Fever (DHF). The immune response rather than the virus itself is involved in the generation of more severe disease, a process called immunopathology.

The main target cells of DENV are innate immune cells like dendritic cells and monocytes/macrophages. We are investigating the hypothesis that DENV infection triggers specific molecular processes in these antigen presenting cells leading to higher viral loads, de‐regulated immune responses and subsequent immunopathology.
