Multi-functional assessment of childhood obesity
Obesity is a huge and increasing problem in our children and young people that has massive potential impacts on the NHS. Latest estimates are that one child in three is overweight or obese when they leave primary school.
Figures from Public Health England, National Child Measurement Programme 2016/17 which measures 1 million children in English schools, show that 1 in-3 children in Year 6 are overweight or obese, and are twice as likely to be obese as an adult. Obesity is strongly associated with type 2 diabetes, coronary heart disease, cancer, stroke & depression and costs UK society £27-£45 billion per annum.
This exemplar will develop a paediatric version of Perspectum Diagnostics MultiOrganScan tocombat the urgent need to develop new paediatric specific treatments. Once available, optimal treatment allocation will depend on comprehensive patients stratification.
Using BioBank data, Perspectum has demonstrated in adults that AI-based MRI image analysis can measure precisely liver steatosis, inflammation, and fibrosis; and can measure change following interventions such as diet, exercise, or drug regime. We will show how MR assessment of young people can highlight at risk organs and communicate quantitative information back to parents and patients.
