Strategic Business Partnership with Novo
Novo is a global leader in diabetes therapeutics, with a long history of innovation in diabetes care. The company has a longstanding relationship with the University of Oxford, itself a global leader in metabolism research. In 2017, the Novo Nordisk Research Centre Oxford (NN R&D UK) was established as part of a strategic alliance between the two organisations.
About the Oxford–Novo partnership
The partnership between Novo and Oxford aims to establish landmark collaborations to advance research in diabetes and cardiometabolic disease, with the goal of developing innovative medicines that make a difference in patients’ lives.
Uniquely, the partnership has seen Novo establish an on-site presence at the University of Oxford through the Nordisk Research Centre Oxford (NN R&D UK). Established in 2017, the Centre grew to employ up to 100 researchers during its first few years. NN R&D UK researchers are based in state-of-the-art laboratories in the Innovation Building on the Old Road Campus, which officially opened in September 2018.
Collaborative projects have been jointly developed and co-funded through the Strategic Alliance Committee. NN R&D UK also contributes to training the next generation of diabetes research scientists by co-sponsoring students.
NN R&D UK is led by Professor Mishal Patel and comprises four departments: Computational Biology; Discovery Technologies and Genomics; Genetics; and Discovery Biology and Pharmacology.
