The number of obese adults in the UK could be reduced by 180,000 with a 20% tax on sugary drinks, say researchers at the University of Oxford and the University of Reading. The tax could raise over £275 million for the Treasury.

Professor Sir Walter Bodmer of the Department of Oncology and Professor Douglas Higgs, head of the MRC Weatherall Institute of Molecular Medicine at Oxford University, have been named winners of significant prizes by the Royal Society in the UK national academy of science's annual set of awards for outstanding research and contributions to science.

On 12th July 2013, Sir Michael and Lady Betty Kadoorie officially opened the new extension of the Kadoorie Centre for critical care, research and education. The Kadoorie Centre, located at Oxford’s John Radcliffe Hospital, is a place for collaborative research and development in critical care, traumatic injury and rehabilitation. Oxford University and NHS staff work with patients and clinical colleagues to ensure good quality research is developed that will improve patient care.

The Wellcome Trust has today announced that Dame Kay Davies, Dr Lee’s Professor of Anatomy at the University of Oxford, has been appointed as its Deputy Chairman. Dame Kay, who has been a Governor of the Trust since January 2008, will take up the role on 1 October 2013.
