Clinical Tutorials?

Balliol has an outstanding biomedical tradition.  The graduate biomedical community is especially strong and includes not only the clinical medical students but a large number of postgraduate scholars (many medically qualified) undertaking Master’s and DPhil programmes.  The clinical students are looked after by the Fellow in Clinical Medicine with support from the Fellow in Biomedical Sciences, all the other medical tutors and lecturers and a cohort of doctors in training.  Regular clinical tutorials are arranged to supplement and complement the teaching provided by the University.  These take place particularly in Years 4 and 6, as students prepare for their OSCE examinations.  There is a well-established, realistic annual mock OSCE prior to Finals undertaken in conjunction with several other colleges.  Specialist tutorials are regularly provided in a number of disciplines, and bespoke clinical tutorials can be arranged in any subject if needed.  Whilst some tutorials are consultant-delivered, many are provided by a growing network of enthusiastic doctors in training.  Most are recent Balliol alumni with specific insight into the requirements of the Oxford clinical course and some are studying for qualifications as clinician-educators.

The Balliol Medical Society meets regularly and has an annual dinner open to alumni.  All clinical and biomedical students are automatically members.  The Society provides a valuable link between pre-clinical and clinical students.

Alumni support: The clinical tutors provide long-term support to previous clinical students and Balliol alumni have an impressive record of success in achieving highly competitive post-graduate scholarships, especially to study in the United States.

Careers and elective advice: An extensive global network of contacts has allowed us to assist students in setting up electives, internships, etc.

Clinical Tutorials

College clinical tutorials are arranged by the fellow for clinical medicine, and occur approximately weekly during the clinical portion of year 4, and in the build up to final clinical examinations in year 6.  These tutorials are focused on developing clinical acumen in medicine and surgery through the examination of patients under the guidance of one of a number of practising clinicians associated with the college and chosen for their excellence in teaching.  Students are also offered clinical science tutorials (mainly case-based teaching) throughout the three clinical years.

An advantage of the smaller number of students in each clinical year, is that the tutors will get to know the students well, allowing them to offer pastoral support as needed, and ensuring that tutorials can be tailored towards the needs of the individuals.

Clinical Tutorials

One permanent college lecturer acts as director of clinical medicine (Dr Michala Pedersen, consultant cardiologist and electrophysiologist), she co-ordinates clinical medicine teaching at Christ Church. With her, we have three excellent Clinical Teaching Assistants who are middle grade clinical doctors at the John Radcliffe (currently Dr Tanner, Dr Williams and Dr Ng). They provide several teaching sessions every week in the form of bedside teaching and more knowledge-based sessions. Mock OSCEs and MCQs are organised leading up to the Year 4 and Year 6 examinations. Additionally, there is a unique peer-to-peer teaching programme amongst clinical students, supported by fellows and lecturers. This is greatly enjoyed by all involved, strengthening clinical group cohesion, and very useful for developing communication and teaching skills.

The director of clinical medicine meets with every clinical student each term to help ensure progress, as well as offering pastoral care, guidance, and career advice. Once a year we offer CV preparation sessions. We invite each student year group to dine at High Table every year. The very active Christ Church Medical Society hosts termly events, such as receptions, seminars and an annual keynote lecture and formal dinner. Additionally, Christ Church medical students from all six years benefit from a termly joint teaching session followed by dinner in hall, integrating the year groups and allowing informal meetings between students and preclinical and clinical lecturers, tutors and fellows.

These include Dr James Kennedy (Geratology), Prof Andrew Farmer (General Practice), Prof Keith Channon (Cardiology), Dr Katherine Bull (Renal), Dr Sarah Howles (Urology), Prof Marian Knight MBE (Maternal and Child Health), Dr Meera Madhaven (Infectious disease), Prof Fadi Isa (Plastic Surgery and Transplantation) and Dr Prem Jareonsettasin (Neurology), Dr Katy Boncey (General Medicine/Geratology), Dr Katrina Fordwor (Haematology), Prof Gail Hayward (General Practice) and Mr Oliver McCallion (Paediatric Surgery) . Prof Neil Herring (Cardiology), who directs studies for pre-clinical students, also provides support and continuity through the whole of the medical course. The focus is on facilitating links between students and practitioners at the John Radcliffe Hospital and with local health care providers.  Teaching sessions are normally given once a week and may increase in frequency around exam times.  Both medicine and surgery are covered, with an emphasis on clinical skills.

The college medical society is named after Prof Sir Roger Bannister, a very distinguished Neurologist who was a 5th year medical student at Exeter when he became the first person to run a mile in under 4 minutes at the Iffley Road Stadium. The Society holds speaker meetings, presentation evenings and dinners for current and old members and aims to help integrate the pre-clinical and clinical years as well as the strong biomedical science community within the College.

Clinical Tutorials

Clinical teaching is led by Dr Sheila Lumley and Dr Radhika Chadha and delivered by a team of Joan and Richard Doll Clinical Tutorial Fellows and Teaching Associates. Dr Alexander Finlayson oversees support for students enrolled on the GEM programme.

We have up to 100 medical students and dozens of medically qualified Fellows. There is sufficient critical mass to allow you to find others with similar interests including many established clinicians and researchers (not just Fellows, but Teaching Associates, Members of Common Room and alumni). It is usually possible to find someone who can advise on a project, help with elective contacts, or provide useful careers advice.

Standard teaching provision:

  • Tuesday evening seminars: weekly case-based teaching in college running throughout the year (not just ‘full’ term), for Y4, Y5 in the run up to exams and Y6.
  • Bedside teaching: weekly small group, ward-based teaching (4-6 students/group), approximately an hour a week for Y4 and Y6. Provided by Teaching Associates in Oxford and at District General Hospitals.
  • Y5 small group teaching: we have a team of speciality-specific Teaching Associates (Paeds, O&G, Neuro, MSK, GP & Psych) available to give tutorials throughout Y5.
  • Extra core teaching: e.g. radiology.
  • Peer-led teaching: students often teach those in the year(s) below either formally or informally and can make use of examination couches in college.
  • Exam preparation: we offer past-paper practice session and multi-station OSCE
  • Additional benefits: a free subscription to an online question bank.
  • Support with job applications: e.g. career advice, SFP mock interviews.

Co-curricular activities:

  • Skills sessions: e.g. surgical skills (including use of laparoscopic machines), ultrasound and coding.
  • Richard Doll Society: our active medical society holds speaker meetings, an annual conference, outreach events and dinners for current college members and alumni.
  • College events: GTC hosts a number of formal lectures, workshops, and conferences, which appeal to its constituents and the wider academic community. Examples are available on the GTC website (https://www.gtc.ox.ac.uk/academic/).
  • Academic Matching Scheme: students are matched to current Fellows or alumni of GTC to gain advice (and potentially work experience) in areas such as research and management/leadership skills.

Normally 2 years.

Rent (per week or month)

£675 - £980 rates per month (2023-24) for a single room depending on size and facilities. Limited numbers of double rooms, flats and houses for families are also available. Rent can be waived during electives or other prolonged absence. Please refer to our accommodation pages for further information about our college accommodation.

Equipment and library

New students receive a:

  • free Littmann IV stethoscope,
  • tendon hammer,
  • pen torch,
  • free copy of the OHCM,
  • subscription to an online question bank,
  • and have access to borrow an ophthalmoscope/otoscope whenever needed.

The Library has a superb collection for BM students including multiple copies of books from the Clinical School's recommended reading lists, and is highly responsive to student requests, which significantly reduces the amount students will need to spend on purchasing books. Students going into their final year (Y6 BM) are also given texts that will help with their final year of clinical studies and will be useful upon completion of the programme. Students are also permitted to use up to £50 per year of their annual grant for academic activities to purchase scrubs/clogs/clinical attire.

Management in Medicine programme

The Management in Medicine programme is a unique asset which helps clinical students (alongside others) to learn leadership and management skills (for both individual and team-based effectiveness and efficiency), and to understand better health care delivery. These skills make a huge difference both in clinical practice and in research teams, and are increasingly important for doctors, but not yet part of the curriculum for BM. The scheme allows opportunities for shadowing a senior manager and/or for working on a ‘live’ service improvement project as well as a rolling programme of seminars and workshops (which are outside office hours and will not clash with medical school commitments).

Book grant

The College library has multiple copies of all core texts for all clinical years, and responds quickly to new requests. In addition the College offers a £60 book grant for first year clinical students.

Equipment and Travel/elective grants

Clinical students can apply for £200 towards clinical equipment and £500 towards the 6th year elective. In addition the college has generous support for travel associated with the students’ elective (max £1,000) and any travel associated with year 5 placements overseas, as well as conferences. If required there are also hardship funds to support all graduate students.

Clinical Tutorials

St Hilda’s is unique at Oxford in having such a close-working and joined-up approach to pre-clinical and clinical support, in both pastoral and academic support; there is no barrier between the two stages of training at Hilda's. Our students feel that the Clinical Tutors know them even before they are in year 4, and the Pre-clinical Tutors are in touch during every stage of the clinical years.

The Clinical Medicine Fellow, Dr Catherine Swales, is the college graduate advisor for all the clinical students at St Hilda’s as well as being the Director of Clinical Studies in the Clinical Medicine School at Oxford University.

As a College Graduate Advisor Dr Swales undertakes termly appraisals with clinical students, provides pastoral care and advises on work experience. As the Clinical Medicine Tutor Dr Swales oversees, and with the other Clinical Lecturers, delivers college clinical teaching for years 4, 5 and 6. The majority of this clinical teaching is focused in year 4 and 6, as year 5 mostly covers sub-speciality training (e.g. paediatrics, psychiatry). However Dr Swales sees all clinical medicine students regularly throughout year 5 for appraisal.

Contact time is complex as students are often at district general hospitals, but overall St Hilda’s offers approximately 1-2 hours teaching in both medicine and surgery per week in years 4 and 6. Contact time increases to 4-6 hours per week for each of medicine and surgery approaching examination periods. Teaching sessions can be didactic teaching, looking over past papers, discussing complex cases, communication skills training and examinations skills teaching/assessment; and is tailored to meet the group’s needs and then individuals if needed. Tutors also provide a mock clinical exam.

Medical Society

The medical students feel part of the College’s Medical Community. We offer a lot of subject events for medical students and the clinical students can also attend Graduate Dinners every year at which students and their college advisors get a chance to meet and socialise. The Medical Society regularly hosts seminars and conferences involving Alumnae and Friends, that are not only of widespread interest to both undergraduate and graduate students but also offer opportunities for career networking.

St Hugh’s offers tutorial support in all relevant areas of Medicine and Medical Sciences. The College has built an extensive clinical teaching team with more than ten tutors and lecturers offering a very broad range of expertise and led by Dr David Holdsworth (Cardiologist) and Dr Laura Watts (Rheumatologist). There is a strong sense of community, since more than half of our clinical tutors have been students at St Hugh’s, and are now at different stages of their careers from junior doctor to consultant. Tutorial frequency is geared towards need in any clinical year with particular focus on years 4 and 6. Provision includes small group clinical tutorials and bedside teaching, and can be geared to the specific requirements of students in the year cohort. In research, St Hugh’s has particular strengths in neuroscience, endocrinology, anatomy, genetics, cancer biology, developmental biology, cell-cell signalling, cardiac physiology, neurodegenerative disease and pathology.

Clinical Tutorials?

St Peter’s is a warm, collegiate and supportive medical college. The clinical course is led by Dr Susanne Hodgson, a Clinician Scientist working in Vaccine development and Consultant in Infectious Diseases, Microbiology and Acute General Medicine. Dr Hodgson has more than 15 years’ experience in college teaching and provides the majority of teaching, as well as pastoral support and clinical and academic careers advice.

Teaching is also delivered by the College’s Associate Clinical Tutors in Medicine, Surgery and Radiology. This senior teaching team prioritise bedside teaching and examination skills (as this is often the preference of students) but teaching is tailored to each group’s needs and also includes didactic teaching, discussion of complex cases and review of past papers.

Students receive a minimum of 12 hours of tutorials in both the first and third clinical years in groups of no more than 4 students. Students on the graduate entry course also receive 12 hours of clinical tutorials in the first year of their course. This tutorial provision more than meets that recommended in the guidelines produced by the Clinical School.

Number of years for which accommodation is available

For students joining St Peter’s from other colleges for the clinical part of the course: Up to 1 year in college graduate accommodation (but demand outstrips supply so this is not guaranteed for all first year graduates).

For students remaining at St Peter’s: Students in Y3 of pre-clinical studies are entitled to enter the room ballot for the following year alongside other students in their cohort. Y4 students have sufficient priority in the ballot to ensure that any students who have lived out in Y2 will be allocated a room inY4 if they enter the ballot.

Pastoral Support

All students have a designated Graduate Advisor, currently Dr Simon Yarrow (Retained Lecturer in Clinical Medicine), who is a Consultant Anaesthetist in the Neurosciences Unit. He keeps a close eye on each student’s progress, and is well-placed to offer career advice, help with job applications, act as a referee, and provide extra support for students facing unexpected problems.

The Wadham Medical Society is particularly active, and a focus for students in all 6 years of the course. There are regular termly meetings with external speakers, the Michaelmas event taking the form of a black-tie dinner in college. Every three years there is a larger gathering to which all previous medical alumni are invited.

Academic Support

Regular bedside tutorials are organised, with a particular emphasis on preparation for the final exams halfway through year 6. Dr Yarrow is supported by 3 Teaching Associates who are junior doctors in training. In addition, many ex-Wadham students working at the John Radcliffe are able to offer ad hoc teaching, and Year 6 students on the Med-Ed module often contribute as well. Our long-term aim is to develop a network of enthusiastic and expert teachers to ensure Wadham’s good reputation in Medicine is maintained.

Dr Yarrow organises more structured teaching in the autumn before finals as part of a consortium of 4 colleges, allowing Wadham students access to other colleges’ lecturers; there is also a mock OSCE exam just before Christmas.
