Peter J. Magill

MRC Programme Leader

  • Deputy Director of the MRC Brain Network Dynamics Unit
  • Professor of Neurobiology

Neuroscientist

Peter Magill is Professor of Neurobiology and Deputy Director of the MRC Brain Network Dynamics Unit at the University of Oxford. Professor Magill has been an MRC Programme Leader at the University of Oxford since 2009. His core research interests lie within the broad fields of movement control and neurodegenerative disorders. He has spent his research career elucidating the normal and pathological operational principles of the basal ganglia and their partner thalamocortical circuits, with a focus on defining the cellular and systems substrates of impaired behaviours in Parkinsonism. In vivo electrophysiological recordings, quantitative anatomical methods, and the use of genetics-based approaches for the monitoring and manipulation of specified cell types, are all central to Professor Magill’s research strategy. He places special emphasis on using high-resolution readouts to define the specialized roles of distinct brain cell types in health and disease. Professor Magill is the recipient of a prestigious Investigator Award from The Wellcome Trust, and is also one of the founding Investigators and Theme Leaders at the Oxford Parkinson's Disease Centre.
