Careers and Networking

Information about the careers development and networking opportunities (e.g. careers events and CV workshops) in departments, which are open to all MRC-funded students, can be found below.

department of computer science

The Department of Computer Science hosts a wide range of careers events with companies such as Google, Facebook and Microsoft. Additionally, the department hosts events from other industry sectors such as pharmaceutical companies. For further information contact Shoshannah Holdom.

DEPARTMENT OF MATERIALS

The Department of Materials offers a range of transferable careers skills courses, including:

  • Industrial Visits and Talks 
  • Looking to the Future - What do Employers Seek? 
  • MatSoc Visits & Talks 
  • The IOM3 - Benefits of Student Membership 
  • The OU Careers Service - Active Job Hunting 

These are summarised in the PGR section at the end of the General Scheme of Lectures and are typically available for booking via the Mathematical Physical and Life Sciences Division GAP on the Researcher Training Tool.

NUFFIELD DEPARTMENT OF OBSTETRICS AND GYNAECOLOGY

The Nuffield Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology hosts a careers workshop in Hilary Term. Further information can be found by contacting Graduate Studies.

DEPARTMENT OF PHARMACOLOGY

The Department of Pharmacology hosts two careers and networking events:

  • Careers in Pharmacology Symposium
  • Postdoc and DPhil Seminar

These events allow students to learn about careers in pharmacology as well as present their own published and unpublished work. For further information, contact Graduate Studies.

Department of physiology, anatomy and genetics

Currently, there are two careers development workshops in the Department of Physiology, Anatomy and Genetics. These are:

  • Improving Your CV - Varies
