Professor Charlie Stagg (Nuffield Department of Clinical Neurosciences) discusses how Wellcome ISSF and John Fell Funding allowed her group to establish world-leading neurophysiological resources at Oxford.

project Summary 

This project established a new laboratory to use transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) to study the brain at the Oxford Centre for Human Brain Activity. The Wellcome ISSF and John Fell Fund provided money to set up a new research facility, purchase essential equipment, and recruit an experienced expert researcher to set up and run the facility. The laboratory has helped to cement Oxford as a world-leader in human neuroimaging and neurophysiology.

Funding

This project received £83k from the John Fell Fund between March 2016 and February 2017, and £83k from the Wellcome Trust ISSF between July 2016 and September 2018. The panels funded the project based on the excellence of the science, but the proposal also clearly articulated the need for these facilities, which Oxford previously lacked. In addition, several projects across three departments were identified that would benefit from these resources.
