Symon Kariuki, a researcher  at the KEMRI-Wellcome Trust Research Programme, is one of five early career researchers to receive a 2017 MQ Fellowship. Kariuki will investigating the genetic risk factors in epilepsy and mental illness. His award is co-funded by The Stanley Center for Psychiatric Research at the Broad Institute. 

The KEMRI - Wellcome Trust Research Programme was formed in 1989 when the Kenya Medical Research Institute formed a partnership with the Wellcome Trust and the University of Oxford.

Researchers from the Ineos Oxford Institute for antimicrobial research (IOI) and Cardiff University have found evidence that bacteria resistant to colistin, a last-resort antibiotic, were present in mothers and babies under a week old in Nigeria in 2016, despite limited clinical use of colistin at that time in the country. The findings have been published in Nature Communications.
