Brainy connections
- We can use MRI scanners to look at the fibres that connect different brain areas. This type of scanning is called diffusion tractography imaging or DTI for short.
- The image on the front of this postcard is a DTI image and it shows us some of the strongest connections to a particular part of the brainstem.
- The brainstem contains little hubs of nerves called nuclei. When we get scared, they are in charge of whether we stay still, run away or prepare for a fight.
- We call this the flight, fright or fight response and lots of animals have it including cats and rats.
