Heads of Oxford University Clinical Academic Departments are invited to make recommendations for appointments to Litchfield Lecturerships with title for the academic year 1 October 2023 – 30 September 2024. You are requested to consult senior colleagues and others within your department before making your nominations. The closing date will be 31 January 2023.

Litchfield Lecturerships without title are available for the academic year 2022-23.

Litchfield Lecturerships with title 2023-24

The Medical Sciences Board administers the trust and currently appoints one or more distinguished persons to deliver a Litchfield Lecture in Oxford each year. Litchfield Lecturerships with title are for a one week residential appointment. The lecturers are required by the board to give one lecture, the Litchfield Lecture, as part of the appointment. The sponsoring department will be responsible for making arrangements for the Lecturer’s visit and for the organisation of the Litchfield Lecture. The lecture should provide clinical instruction in Oxford for members of the University, such as would be of profit to clinical students as well as to advanced students in that field.  No other stipulations are laid down. Travel and subsistence expenses will be funded by the lecturership in line with the University Expenses Policy.

Applications will be considered by a panel appointed by the Medical Sciences Board. The panel will take the level of available funding into account before making its recommendations. Subsistence expenses vary considerably between appointments:there are no costs to the Trust if the lecturer stays with a member of the department, and college accommodation is much cheaper than hotel accommodation. It is therefore essential that nominations include an estimate of the probable subsistence expenses to assist the divisional board in the allocation of the available funds. Applications will not be accepted without this information.

Formal invitations to take up appointments will be sent from the Medical School, but heads of departments are asked to make unofficial soundings before making an application to find out whether the nominees would be available and are willing to accept an appointment.

Please submit nominations (including supporting particulars, a brief cv and estimate of costs) for appointments to Litchfield Lecturerships with title to Laura Morgan by no later than 31 January 2023. If you wish to make more than one nomination, please rank each candidate in order of priority.

Litchfield Lecturerships without title 2022-23

Litchfield Lecturerships without title are for the giving of a single lecture and will fund the cost of overnight accommodation (if required) and travel costs. The lecture should provide clinical instruction in Oxford for members of the University, such as would be of profit to clinical students as well as to advanced students in that field.

Heads of departments may submit recommendations for the appointment of Litchfield Lecturers without title at any time in the current academic year. Nevertheless, the funds available are limited and it has been decided that applications should be approved on a first-come, first-served basis until the allocation is exhausted. Retrospective
applications will not be accepted. Applications should include a brief CV or outline of the academic activities/current post of the proposed lecturer and details of proposed visit (including dates if possible at this stage). Please submit your nomination to Laura Morgan.
