MRC have launched the second round of their Purchase mid-range equipment for biomedical research scheme.

Outline of call

This scheme will fund equipment for research across MRC’s scientific areas.  Relevance to the priority areas in MRC’s delivery plan is particularly encouraged.  Applications may be for new capability or replacement equipment for existing capability.

Bids can request a contribution of between £100,000 and £800,000 for equipment.  MRC will fund 100% of the full economic cost up to this limit.  For items of higher cost, institutional or partner contributions will be required.

It is expected that awards would be made by Q1 in the 2023/24 financial year. Successful applicants need to complete their spending by 31 March 2024.

Eligibility

The MRC Equipment opportunity is open to institutions and researchers normally eligible to apply to MRC, as described in MRC’s guidance for applicants.  It is also open to eligible facility staff as either principal investigators or co-investigators, consistent with the Technician Commitment to which the University is a signatory.

An individual can only lead as PI on one application, except by prior agreement with MRC.

Funding available

  • This call is for capital funding only (under the directly incurred equipment heading)
  • Costs such as installation or service maintenance contracts can be included only if they are one-off costs and part of the manufacturer’s offer
  • Service maintenance contracts up to 5 years in duration may be included but the contract cost must be paid by 31 March 2024

Application Process

The University may only submit 9 applications to this call, so it is likely to be necessary to conduct a selection process to determine which applications can go forward. Expressions of Interest (EoI) are therefore now invited through IRAMS (“MRC Mid-range equipment for biomedical research: EOI”) by midday on Monday 21 November.  Please direct any queries to research@medsci

There is no need for an X5 costing of internal EoI applications. Bids that can go forward to the MRC will have to go through a full costing and RS review.

Deadline

MRC deadline: Thursday 12 January 2023, 4pm
