Our research in Global Health
Our research stretches well beyond the confines of Oxford. In 1979 we recognised that a new emphasis on clinical investigation was needed to tackle some of the increasingly urgent problems created by tropical diseases such as malaria and TB and established the first of our network of units in Asia and Africa. We now have permanently staffed units in Thailand, Kenya, Vietnam and Laos and participate in collaborative research in many other countries in Africa, Asia and South America. Our long term studies of patients in tropical countries is supported by basic science at Oxford and has led to many exciting developments, most notably potential vaccines for malaria and HIV which are in clinical trials.
