The Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) is currently responsible for more deaths than any other infectious agent, and yet we have neither an effective vaccine nor prophylactic antiviral agents that are accessible to the majority of those at risk. Our current research themes share the common goals of: i) increasing our understanding at the molecular level of how HIV assembles within, and disseminates between cells; ii) designing vaccine immunogens that elicit both systemic and mucosal neutralising antibody responses to HIV; iii) understanding how antigen modification by reactive carbonyls can lead to allergy and hypersensitivity. Multi-disciplinary approaches are necessary to address the questions that we are asking: to help us achieve our goals, we have collaborations and partnerships with several local and international research groups, and with industry. We hope that via this collaborative approach we can take discoveries in basic science through to their development and application.  Research Details The cell biology of HIV entry, assembly, exit and cell-cell spread HIV neutralising antibody vaccine design and development Reactive carbonyls in allergy and hypersensitivity Click here for details of project available through 4 year DPhil Departmental Studentship Competition 2013
